Seeds of Self-Reliance

By Opportunity International

Seeds of Self-Reliance is a two-year programme helping refugees in Southwestern Uganda build stronger, more independent lives. With part-funding from the Isle of Man Government, we’re working in two of Uganda’s largest refugee settlements — Nakivale and Rwamwanja — where thousands of people are based, having fled violence and hardship in neighbouring countries.

This project is about more than survival. It’s about what happens next — how people rebuild, how they grow, and how they take control of their futures.

We focus on the things that create lasting change, including:

  • Practical training
  • Access to savings and small loans
  • Opportunities to build businesses and grow food
  • Confidence, dignity and hope

The challenge

Refugees in Uganda face growing hardship. Food rations are shrinking. Work is scarce. Women in particular face deep-rooted barriers to earning and leading. Many people are determined to change their circumstances — they just need the opportunity to get started.

Our approach

We are working with refugee-led organisations, we support 10,000 refugees and host community members to:

  • Join savings groups that build financial habits and unlock small loans
  • Take part in financial literacy, business and leadership training
  • Launch and grow businesses, with seed capital and mentoring
  • Learn climate-smart farming methods to improve food and income
  • Strengthen women’s roles in homes, businesses and community groups
  • Connect with formal banking services to build long-term security

Our impact

By the end of the project:

  • 400 savings groups will be running
  • 1,280 new or expanded refugee businesses will be in operation
  • 5,500 people will have formal savings accounts
  • 1,000 farmers will be using improved techniques
  • More women will be earning, leading, and making decisions

Above all, the project will foster confidence, enable choice and create lasting change — planting the seeds of self-reliance.
