Case Study: Amazing Grace
We all try to save – although in Malawi it’s less for rainy days and more for basic expenses like education, health care and housing.
Vulnerable Savings
Many people in Malawi keep their money in hiding places as banks may be far away or their savings too small to be accepted by commercial banks. Grace (above), who runs a business selling potatoes, used to keep her earnings under her pillow.
Secure Savings
She was delighted when the Opportunity Bank of Malawi (OIBM) opened a branch office in her market place in Blantyre and soon opened an account. She now deposits her earnings at least twice a week.
Transforming Savings
Grace has big plans for her future. She would like to put her three children through school and also hopes to buy a plot of land and build a house. She has already saved a total of around £400.
