Make a Donation Leave a Gift in Your Will

Our vision is a world in which all people have the opportunity to lift themselves, their families and their communities out of poverty. A world where all children go to school, families are fed and communities thrive.

Gifts left in Wills are vital to the future of our work. People living in poverty need a secure income to survive. Our services enable people to develop their small businesses and work their own way out of poverty, giving them dignity and a future hope for themselves, their families and their communities. By investing in the lives of poor communities, you can have an impact that reaches beyond a lifetime.

Please remember Opportunity International in your Will. With 99% of micro-loans being repaid and recycled, it is a gift that really does keep on giving. It will last for generations.

Our promises to you…

  • We will respect your right to privacy – you do not have to tell us your decision (although we would love to be able to say thank you).
  • We understand that those you care about come first.
  • We understand that circumstances may change and this may result in you taking us out of your Will.
  • We will keep you updated on our work which is only made possible by gifts like yours. Just let us know how you would prefer to receive this information.
  • We promise to handle your gift with sensitivity and respect.
  • We promise to use your gift wisely.

Your questions answered

How do I leave Opportunity International a gift in my will?

Making a Will is the only way you can be sure that your wishes are understood. It is usually a quick, simple and inexpensive process that ensures that those you care about are well looked after.

If you already have a Will and are thinking about leaving a gift to Opportunity International, you can add a simple codicil (a short document that is added to your Will).

The best thing to do is to speak to your solicitor who will advise you on how to create or amend an existing Will.

The key information that your solicitor will need is that bequests should be left to Opportunity International UK and must use our registered charity numbers (UK number 1107713; Scotland number SC039692) and registered address:
Opportunity International UK, Angel Court, 81 St Clements, Oxford, OX4 1AW

How much does Opportunity International spend on administration and fundraising costs?

In 2016, for every £1 donated, we spent 90p helping to provide much needed microfinance services to over 9 million clients across the world. The remaining 10p was used to help us raise more money. You can download our 2016 financial summary here.

What types of gifts are there?

You can either give a proportion of your estate, a percentage of your estate after all other gifts have been made and debts cleared, or a cash gift of a specified amount of money.

Your solicitor will advise on the specific wording you need to use for different types of gifts.

What about inheritance tax?

Any gifts to charity are exempt from Inheritance Tax. Leaving a gift to a charity could significantly reduce the burden of Inheritance Tax on loved ones.

In 2009, the government set the Inheritance Tax threshold at £325,000 ( £650,000 for couples), above which Inheritance Tax is payable at the rate of 40%. If your estate is liable to attract Inheritance Tax, leaving a gift to charity can have the effect of reducing the overall tax burden on family and friends.

As a result of changes introduced in April 2012, Inheritance Tax can be reduced from 40% to 36% for donors who leave more than 10% of their net estate to charity. “Net” estate means the value of the estate after all Inheritance Tax exemptions, reliefs and the tax free allowance have been deducted.

  • For further information about reducing your Inheritance Tax bill by giving to charity, please visit the HRMC website.
  • To calculate the potential inheritance tax reductions by leaving a legacy to charity, please use the HMRC’s Inheritance Tax reduced rate calculator.
  • Legacy 10 also provides information and a donation calculator illustrating the impact on your friends and family by leaving a donation to charity.
  • Speak to your solicitor who can advise on the positive effects of leaving a donation in your Will to the inheritance tax on your estate.
