Agriculture is at the heart of addressing poverty. 80% of people living in extreme poverty are in rural sub-Saharan Africa. Our agricultural programme supports the growth of rural businesses across the agricultural sector.
Malnutrition caused by hunger leads to a wide range of health problems and millions of deaths each year. Astonishingly, 20% of Africa’s population - around 307 million people - experience hunger. Many of them are farmers operating at just 40% of their capacity. As the population increases, so does the demand for food. In response, African farmers need to improve both the quality of their crops and the size of their harvests.
Opportunity International helps farmers meet this demand. We connect farmers to financial services, giving them access to savings and loans, and provide training to improve farm productivity and resilience. These tools help farmers grow higher-quality crops and reduce hunger and food insecurity in their communities.
Last year, our programmes reached over 35,000 farmers, helping them to build resilience to climate change and provide food for their families.
