Health

Good health is the foundation for a thriving life, but for families living in poverty, it’s often out of reach. Every year, unexpected medical costs push more than one billion people deeper into poverty, creating a cycle that’s hard to break.

Opportunity International believes that no one should have to choose between healthcare and financial stability. That’s why we’re working across four countries to make healthcare more accessible. By combining financial services with health education and training, we help families protect their health and their future.

Our impact

  • 768,849 clients reached across 4 countries
  • 68% are women
  • 305,346 families educated in health

Why it matters

For families in developing economies, healthcare can feel impossible to afford – especially in rural areas. An emergency can wipe out savings and force families further into poverty.

Did you know? 90% of essential health needs could be met by bringing care closer to vulnerable communities.

The barriers

  • Public health systems often lack the capacity to meet widespread needs, particularly in Africa and Asia.
  • Private providers struggle with limited resources to deliver quality care.
  • Remote communities remain hard to reach, leaving millions without access to even basic services.

What we do

Our global Opportunity International network works hand-in-hand with trusted local partners to deliver health initiaitves across India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

Together, we focus on these key areas:

Community Health Education

We train female clients to become Health Leaders in their communities. These leaders receive training in women’s health – covering nutrition, menstrual health, maternal and child care – and share this knowledge to prevent disease and promote healthy practices.
They also connect families with medical professionals and provide access to essential health products.

Strengthening Local Healthcare Providers

Health Entrepreneurs – those running community pharmacies, medicine shops, and small clinics – are often the first point of contact for rural families. We provide them with training and access to finance so they can grow their businesses and deliver better care.

Health-Focused Financial Services

Unexpected health costs can devastate families. That’s why we work with financial institutions to design health-related financial products, including affordable loans, savings, and health insurance, so families can build resilience and protect their future.
