Our Radio 4 Appeal tells the story of Amama, a young mother from northern Ghana who travelled hundreds of miles to Accra to support her child. There, she worked as a kayayei (head porter), carrying heavy loads for little pay while living in unsafe, overcrowded conditions.
After joining Opportunity’s six‑week training programme, Amama learned vocational skills, how to run a business and financial management. She now runs a successful business that supports her family and employs two women. Amama is now passing on the skills she gained from the programme to others.
Listen to our appeal to hear Amama's inspiring story in full and learn more about how we are helping more women like Amama discover their true potential.
“An opportunity shaped Amama’s future –you could provide someone else like Amama that same opportunity.” - Afua Hagan, Opportunity ambassador.
